Environment Ohio activists gather to combat global warming in 2014

Columbus, OH – On a cold winter evening, Environment Ohio’s Columbus-based activists came together at Brothers Drake Meadery in the Short North to jump-start their 2014 campaign to advance global warming solutions.

At the meeting, activists took photos holding “I will #ActOnClimate” signs, placed phone calls to Senator Sherrod Brown, and wrote letters to the Columbus Dispatch to build public support for President Obama’s Climate Action Plan.

“Our Columbus activists have never been more dedicated to advancing global warming solutions than right now,” said Vivian Daly, Field Organizer with Environment Ohio. “It is a critical time to act on climate, and these volunteers are doing their part.”

According to scientists, Ohio will face devastating effects from global warming. Record-breaking heat waves like the summer of 2012 and super-storms like Hurricane Sandy will get increasingly frequent and severe with climate change.

As part of his Climate Action Plan, President Obama plans to limit carbon pollution from power plants while promoting clean, renewable energy sources. Already, Ohioans have submitted a quarter million comments in support of cutting carbon pollution.

Earlier this month the Environmental Protection Agency officially proposed the first-ever national limits on carbon pollution for new power plants, a huge step forward for tackling global warming.

“I volunteer with Environment Ohio to make sure that our environment is protected for today’s communities and future generations,” said Robey Clark-Patrick, a local Environment Ohio volunteer coordinator that has been active in the campaign since last year. “I think that working to protect our environment is the best way to help the largest number of people.”

The Columbus volunteer group is part of a statewide volunteer network also in Cleveland, Lorain, Athens, and Cincinnati. The five Environment Ohio volunteer groups are meeting throughout January to plan their 2014 campaigns to advance global warming solutions.

“Our volunteers’ dedication to tackling global warming is inspiring,” said Daly. “I hope state leaders like Senators Brown and Portman will follow their lead by speaking out in support of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan.”
